Mirror Project
During Youth Appreciation week 2009, Montclair State University shared with us their wonderful Mirror Project that was exhibited at the Public Library, Livingston Town Center and at Livingston High School. The Mirror Project focused on body image and asked students, faculty, and staff: “What do you see when you look in the mirror? The responses were funny, sad, shocking, and everything in between. Using diverse mediums, these self-proclaimed statements were put onto mirrors of different sizes, shapes and ages; some are cracked and flawed, some seem perfect.
The Livingston Youth and Community Services (LYCS) program, in collaboration with Montclair State, the Coordinated School Health Committee (CSHC) and HCHY Youth Appreciation Committee, created our own Livingston Mirror project in 2010. We invited Livingston middle school and high school students as well as parents to create their own mirrors around the question “Who Am I?” Identity is a core issue for youth as they grow into adult-hood. Identity is linked to values and is an important factor in decision making.
Once completed, the Livingston Mirrors were exhibited during Youth Appreciation Week at various locations around town including the Public Library, Livingston Town Center and at Livingston High School. This exhibit challenged people to think about how they perceive themselves.
